Canadian Beats reviews "You Will Know When It's Right"

Canadian/Icelandic singer-songwriter Lindy Vopnfjörd released his latest album You Will Know When It’s Right at the end of March to some accredited fanfare. Recorded with legendary Icelandic songwriter Daníel Ágúst Haraldsson, this album looks to be a great one with Vopnfjörd’s unique storytelling.

The opening track “Love Me Like That” was the debut single from the album and a great start to get people into the style of Vopnfjörd. It’s a very catchy, sing-along song with a great mix of musical tones throughout, showing how the flow of the album will take you.

The follow-up track “Standing on the Sea” reminds me of The Beatles. One of the catchiest rhythms I’ve heard from the start and unique vocals mixed in, this is something that everyone would enjoy. Most people assume this is a classic hit where it’s a new, modern song.

“Our Greatest Irony” is a slower jam, where Vopnfjörd’s voice really shines. Focused more on his vocals with a beautiful, harmonizing piano track in the back and a simple drumline to accompany it. “How Did We Get Away” is a similar vocal-forward song and simple acoustic guitar tracks to emphasise on the lyrics.

The closing track “I’m so Hi” shows Vopnfjörd’s vocal range, ironically his voice goes very high at some points. It’s a very simple and beautiful ending to the album. However, this isn’t the final song. Vopnfjörd included a live version of “Lover Sister” in Reykjavik, which is the capital of Iceland. This is a very unique way to end an album as it shows his album voice and live voice are exactly the same and shows that he encourages sing-alongs as you can hear the crowd interacting with the song.

This album is great for anyone who enjoys some good music. Every song on this album has a unique feel to it that anyone can pick up and enjoy a different track. Making a name for yourself in two different countries is a hard task, but Vopnfjörd has nailed it.
