AFTER THE SURVEILLANCE STATE

"I wrote this song after reading Cory Doctorow's book, Little Brother. It's also inspired by the heroic actions of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden." - Lindy

***
A dreamy narrative, “After the Surveillance State” sees Lindy come out the other side of his dark “No-Knock Raid” moment, an earlier track he penned about the US war on drugs. His frustration in that song is obvious, and his activist streak against useless laws that protect the authorities more than people with vulnerabilities and addictions was fierce. By contrast, “After the Surveillance State” is a song that trots along harmoniously as if the hippies conquered the bad guys and their slogan flowing banners worked. It’s time to “make a run for it” together now, he cries in the song, triumphantly. Blindingly paradisal, it’s steeped in hope. This proves that while Vopnfjord can hold true to his emotions against injustice, he’s flexible enough to vary his musical treatment on the topic, which enhances his discography.

Lyrics

AFTER THE SURVEILLANCE STATE
Before I see you tonight
And I want to say your name
Before we start drinking
Before the song takes you away

When you are still a little shy
When it is hard to raise a smile
Before the flashing lights
Before the flashing lights

Sights pinned on the prize
Under curfew city at night
Pursed lips and street lit eyes
Sharp turns and straight lines

This plan is set in motion
We’ll blow the whole thing wide open
Hear the whistle blow
Through the blue green ocean

After the surveillance state
After we wake this giant
After they’re running scared
After they see all our numbers

They’ll sound the air raid sirens
They’ll sound the air raid sirens

Now that we are almost free

Before I see you tonight
And I am lost for you
Before the all seeing eye
Knows everything we do
This plan is set in motion
We’ll blow this whole thing wide open
Hear the whistle blow
Through the blue green ocean

After the surveillance state
After we wake this giant
After they’re running scared
After they see all our numbers

They’ll sound the air raid sirens
They’ll sound the air raid sirens

Now that we are almost free, let’s make a run for it.
