“Far Behind” was inspired by North Korean defector and human rights advocate Yeonmi Park – her journey to escape North Korea with her mother to reunite with her sister in the South.
Buy her book, "In Order to Live."

“Far Behind” begins the album as a low-key song about a high-profile tale. It’s a folksy medley, and a quaint musical meditation of the real-life account of the harrowing escape of Yeonmi Park from North Korea to reunite with her family. It delights as a peaceful meandering tune: “Let’s escape this place tonight / march across this frozen river / safely to the shore together / to the warm glow of the city lights”. The song sings light, complemented by Vopnfjord’s lyrics reminding the listener of a vulnerable journey where “a broken compass leads the way.” That journey is framed in hope – “And if I can’t find you / I will remind you to meet me in the city of the night / and I’ll keep your dreams with mine / you can’t be far behind.” And this hope echoes in the delicate solemnity in sound that will move you to tears. Vopnfjord is telling a story and creates the scene in sound by stripping the song down so you can almost hear “the rhythm of the cart wheels going by.” We’re carried out on the echoed reverberations of the slide guitar, and sent home with a universal and lasting observation about discovery: “The further we get from the last place we left the easier it will seem to be / And the further we travel the more we unravel the more we are beginning to see.”

Lyrics

FAR BEHIND
Let’s escape this place tonight
March across this frozen river
Safely to the shore together
To the warm glow of the city lights

Before they know, we’ll be away
Pulled by what once kept us apart
Alone with all these stars
A broken compass points the way

And the dustiest streets cracking under your feet
To the rhythm of the cartwheels going by
And if I can’t find you, I will remind you
To meet me in the city of the night
And I’ll keep your dreams with mine
You can’t be far behind

My message will still ring true
Written in a life so long
I want to sing it in a song
So I can hold you

This city is a magical place
Joyful tears illuminated
By the power generated
By the smile on your face

And the further we get from the last place we left
The easier it will seem to be
And the farther we travel the more we unravel
The more we're beginning to see

And I’ll keep your dreams with mine
You can’t be far behind
